The Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources needed to decommission the existing Lower Big Haynes Creek pump station and provide gravity sewer service to the surrounding area. This basin was located within a watershed which required an extended stream buffer zone and had multiple developments under construction with numerous others planned.

Gresham Smith was selected to design a 36-inch force main and 48-inch gravity sewer located in southwest Gwinnett County as well as a trunk sewer project that would terminate at the new pump station which would have the capacity of 32-mgd by the year 2030. Both pipelines are approximately 11,000 feet in length and tunnels were utilized to cross roadways due to the terrain and the cost to reconstruct an excavation. In order to ensure the preservation of the existing wetlands, the project was coordinated with the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

The Lower Big Haynes 36-inch force main and 48-inch gravity sewer will serve a 27,000 acre area, with a population of over 81,000 residents.  The 36-inch main is designed to transmit flow from the Lower Big Haynes pump station to the No Business Creek Water Reclamation Facility. The 48-inch gravity sewer allowed the existing Big Haynes Creek pump station to be retired, thus providing new gravity service.
