Mayor Karl Dean of Nashville-Davidson County (Metro) signed the U.S. Mayors’ Climate Change Agreement and formed a Green Ribbon Committee of business, environmental, and citizen leaders to develop sustainability goals and initiatives for the Metro government. To help accomplish this task, Gresham Smith was appointed to conduct a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory that included data collection guidance, goal setting, and documentation and outreach.

The GHG emissions inventory successfully represented the profile of community and municipal GHGs that were emitted in the base year of 2005. The inventory also served to inform Metro of the major sources of GHG emissions from operations. After successfully completing this baseline GHG inventory, we were selected to further our work by updating the inventory and developing a data collection system and tracking tool for Metro’s use. The updated GHG emission inventory ties to ongoing and future sustainability programs and initiatives, and provides a mechanism to report on Metro’s progress.
