Located in Mint Hill, North Carolina, Novant Mint Hill Medical Center provides residents of the growing Charlotte suburb with healthcare in their own neighborhood. At nearly 207,000 square feet, the three-story hospital and adjacent medical office building provide emergency, inpatient, and outpatient care with 36 inpatient beds; cardiology, orthopedic, emergency, surgery and women’s services; as well as advanced imaging, laboratory, and transitional care departments. Gresham Smith designed the full-service hospital to feel like a destination, honing in on the region’s southern hospitality to create a space that elevates the patient experience and delivers the highest quality care.

Sophisticated Southern Charm

Sophisticated Southern Charm

Sitting on an 80-acre site, the hospital and medical office buildings’ exteriors feature a mix of materials—metal and glass give the building a modern edge, while brick and stonework tie into the community’s traditional architecture. Arched canopies and a porch full of rocking chairs create a welcoming environment with southern charm.
A Logical Layout

A Logical Layout

A shared main entry and lobby connect the hospital and the medical office building, promoting clear wayfinding for patients and visitors. A simple corridor system established separate circulation patterns for visitors, patients and staff, while  connection points on each floor set the stage for future expansion.
A Positive Patient Experience

A Positive Patient Experience

The private patient rooms feature large windows, attached bathrooms, sleeper sofas, and lighting and temperature controls for patient and family convenience and comfort. Additionally, nurse stations and supplies are decentralized, and computers are located at bedsides, which keeps providers close to patients and aligns with owner Novant Health’s approach to care.
An Efficient ED

An Efficient ED

The emergency department’s dedicated entrance is clearly visible on the site, making it easy to find during stressful situations. The 16-bed space is arranged in a racetrack configuration, which allows staff to care for patients based on acuity level, and features a centralized huddle station that provides clear visibility across to each of the standardized treatment rooms. The imaging department is located adjacent to the ED, which saves precious time when treating critical patients.
Prioritizing the Outdoors

Prioritizing the Outdoors

Multiple gardens provide respite from the stressful situations inside the hospital, and nearly a mile of walking trails around the campus encourage visitors and staff to get their steps in each day. The hospital’s dining room overlooks the garden and features an outdoor patio area with ample seating for hospital and community events.
A Focus on Sustainability

A Focus on Sustainability

LED lighting, occupancy sensors and fixture controls for daylight harvesting help reduce energy usage, as well as temperature controls to reduce energy waste at off-peak times. Drinking fountains throughout the buildings feature bottle fillers to reduce plastic waste, and bike racks and lockers encourage alternative transportation.
