In an effort to position Shanghai as a world-class medical destination, the Chinese government launched a design competition challenging architects across the globe to create a blueprint for a new international medical city that would attract medical tourists, expatriates and Chinese nationals alike. An innovative rethinking of the conventional hospital campus secured Gresham Smith first place in the global competition and ultimately the commission to master plan the new state-of-the-art medical complex.

After developing the master plan, we were awarded a contract for the design of two of the medical city’s buildings—one being the Shared Facility. A world-first, the 948,000-square-foot, eight-story shared support facility will serve as the centralized distribution point for all logistical, clinical and public support services for the campus’s five planned hospitals and specialty clinics.

A Vital Hub

A Vital Hub

The Shared Facility will be the public centerpiece of the complex, which will eventually include more than 3,000 beds and approximately 18,000 employees. Along with food service amenities, retail, medical exhibition space and underground parking, the facility is designed to house state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging suites, clinical laboratories, pathology laboratories, pharmacy retail, supply storage, laundry, loading docks and IT services.
Green Building Design

Green Building Design

Planned to be a sustainable, energy-efficient medical campus, the Shared Facility’s green design integrates energy recovery, energy production and waste management strategies. A high-performance facade with horizontal solar shading devices provides a higher insulating value, mitigates solar gain and decreases cooling loads. Numerous green roofs and planted terraces also increase insulation, filter storm water runoff, and contribute to the overall park-like atmosphere of the campus, intended as both a healing environment for patients and staff and a public oasis for citizens of Shanghai.
A Civic Landmark

A Civic Landmark

Shanghai New Hongqiao International Medical Center’s Shared Facility represents a revolutionary new model in healthcare delivery. By centralizing multiple resources and technologies, this civic landmark will significantly reduce unnecessary expenses for the campus’ inpatient and outpatient facilities, and give patients and hospital staff easier access to technologies that might otherwise prove cost-prohibitive for an individual hospital.
