A leader in heart health, St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) aimed to consolidate the services of its renowned heart program in a separately identifiable facility. Challenged by an existing space that had become outdated and was difficult for visitors to navigate, SJMC sought a new environment commensurate with the high-quality care they delivered. Tasked with expanding and reimagining the aging facility, Gresham Smith partnered with a consultant to design a 135,000-square-foot expansion and renovation that supports SJMC’s focus on patient-centered healing as well as its spiritual mission.

The comprehensive expansion and renovation included a consolidated heart program, a new main entrance and lobby, and other improvements. The first impression of the medical center is now formed by a 45-foot-high concave precast wall that creates a welcoming gesture for visitors and a brand-new identity for the facility.
