Seeking to improve healthcare services to residents of growing Hillsborough County, BayCare Health System tasked Gresham Smith with providing facility master planning for a full-service acute care hospital just south of Tampa in Riverview, Florida.

Following the successful master planning effort, BayCare hired us to lead a multidisciplinary team to design the 335,000-square-foot, 90-bed facility—St. Joseph’s Hospital-South—and an adjoining 85,000-square-foot medical office building. Our anything-but-traditional design delivers a spa-like environment and a variety of amenities that support hospitality, comfort and a healing environment.

More Like a Five-Star Hotel

More Like a Five-Star Hotel

The patient and family experience was the first and foremost priority with every aspect of our design. Upon entering the hospital lobby, visitors feel more like they’re entering a luxury hotel with the interior’s sleek, crisp lines and calming color palette.
Designed for Comfort & Convenience

Designed for Comfort & Convenience

Each private patient room includes a sofa bed and recliner, as well as a relaxation area with outlets for computers and phones. A unique headwall design conceals medical gas utilities behind decorative artwork, creating a less clinical atmosphere.
A Less Stressful Place to Wait

A Less Stressful Place to Wait

Featuring views of nature through large windows as well as beautiful artwork, the waiting areas are open and comfortable, creating a soothing environment for family members during a typically stressful time.

Technology, efficiency and flexibility are the core concepts of the treatment spaces. Six operating rooms, with two dedicated for women’s surgeries, include OR integration systems and robotic technology. Adjacent to the surgical suites, two interventional radiology labs share a preparation area, phase-II recovery space and PACU space, with shelled space available for two future interventional labs.
Supporting Quality of Environment

Supporting Quality of Environment

Design features include antimicrobial carpet in the corridors as well as wall-wash lighting fixtures that reduce light-glare on patients as they’re being transferred by staff. The use of technology to minimize overhead paging creates an acoustically ideal environment for both patients and staff.
Providing Separate Circulation

Providing Separate Circulation

On the hospital’s upper floors, the circulation paths maintain separation of public and staff. Public elevators open at the family waiting areas at each level. Staff elevators open up to circulation that connects to surgery and labor and delivery on the second level, as well as to staff work areas on each floor. These elevators also provide direct access to patient rooms on the third and fourth levels for patient transport.
Designed to Grow

Designed to Grow

Designed to accommodate an expansion of up to 300+ beds, St. Joseph’s Hospital-South brings much-needed inpatient and outpatient services to Florida’s SouthShore area. The state-of-the-art facility also includes an emergency department with more than 30 private treatment rooms, advanced imaging, and a chapel that offers patients, visitors and staff a place of quiet refuge for prayer or meditation.
