Tampa General Hospital (TGH) wanted to bring the quality care it is known for to the suburbs. Gresham Smith designed Brandon Healthplex, TGH’s flagship outpatient medical center, to deliver accessible, cost effective and comprehensive medical services to the Brandon community and expand TGH’s presence in the area.

Designing for Comfort and Convenience

Designing for Comfort and Convenience

Brandon Healthplex houses a 24/7 emergency center, specialty and primary care, outpatient surgery, lab and a retail pharmacy. The goal was to provide a one-stop-shop for patients—it even has a coffee shop for patients in need of pick-me-up. We coupled amenities with other patient-centric design elements – ample seating, bright and open interiors, views to the outdoors and a soothing palette – to create a comfortable, convenient, hospitality-inspired space.
Caring for Patients Where They Are

Caring for Patients Where They Are

Brandon Healthplex, located near a major Tampa-area expressway, makes a statement even from the road with a curved main entry façade, metallic panel windows and fritted glass canopies that cover the entry and help welcome in patients. Combined with its wide variety of outpatient services in one building, the facility furthers healthcare accessibility for the community and provides an access point for the larger Tampa General Health system. By placing care within reach of the community, Tampa General not only expands its reach but can help promote population health.
Understanding and Anticipating Needs

Understanding and Anticipating Needs

Brandon Healthplex was designed to meet the needs for the community today and in the future. Furthering connectivity to TGH, it features a helipad for rapid transport to the main hospital’s level one trauma center for critical situations. Looking ahead, select patient rooms in the ambulatory surgery center are equipped with showers. This will allow patients to stay longer than 24 hours, should the ambulatory surgical center regulations in Florida change.
