As part of the Tennessee Better Roads Program, State Route 840 (SR 840) was developed to encourage economic growth by improving community connectivity in Middle Tennessee. Gresham Smith was awarded the contract to perform construction, engineering and inspection services on three sections of the comprehensive project, including 44 bridges and more than 11 million cubic yards of roadway excavation.

Opened to traffic in 2012, the roadway encircles Middle Tennessee’s urban core, improving access to interstate connections for motorists and commercial transportation, reducing commute times and easing congestion in downtown Nashville.

The Road to Completion

Our team encountered numerous challenges throughout the project, such as the planned crossing of several environmentally sensitive areas and the constraints created by an erosion prevention policy. Our CEI staff effectively managed project requirements as well as environmental constraints, keeping this complex and high-profile roadway project on schedule. The State Route was officially designated as Interstate 840 (I-840) in 2016.
