Topre America Corporation, Stamping Plant Program

Topre America Corporation, a part of Japan-based Topre Corp., provides automotive stamping and body structure assemblies for Nissan, Honda and Toyota. Gresham Smith’s relationship with the auto supplier began in 2015 when we were tasked with providing redesign and construction-phase support for an approximately 84,000-square-foot stamping plant in Smyrna, Tennessee.

To date, we have delivered design and construction support services for three new plant buildings and four plant expansions for Topre, encompassing more than 650,000 square feet of building construction and the installation of 18 stamping presses on both the Smyrna and Springfield, Ohio, campuses.

Advanced Design on a Fast-Track Schedule

Gresham Smith worked in parallel with the general contractor to deliver the Smyrna, Tennessee, stamping plant on a fast-track schedule. This approach required the issue of multiple design packages in order to expedite construction.

We also organized and facilitated value engineering sessions with Topre and the general contractor to redesign the project to bring it within the client’s budget and to identify additional cost savings. The facility comprises stamping presses, tool and maintenance areas, shipping, scrap storage, administrative offices and other support spaces within a pre-engineered metal building.

A Vital Engagement

Following the successful completion of the Phase I design of the Smyrna plant, Topre engaged us to provide design services and construction phase support for the first plant expansion, and to design a site master plan for the eventual full buildout planned on the Smyrna site. The client also requested we provide contract management services to assist in controlling the overall project cost and maintaining the project schedule.

Further Supporting Topre America's Growth

The Topre/Gresham Smith partnership expanded to Springfield, Ohio, where we provided full design services and contract management for the construction of a new 170,000-square-foot stamping and assembly plant. Our team assisted in developing the plant and equipment layout, and provided a master plan for the new site.

Gresham Smith is currently providing design, contract management and construction administration services on the second plant expansion, increasing the overall plant footprint to over 400,000 square feet, which accommodates 11 stamping presses. The new facility is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to the Greater Springfield community.

In addition to providing design services and contract management on large capital projects, we support Topre’s operational and maintenance needs as they continue to use the plants and modify them for new production orders. Providing a versatile storage rack design than can be used in their various plant locations, accommodating their fork-truck layout and storage needs, and assisting their maintenance team in developing a cost-effective solution to mitigate exhaust fumes are just a few examples.

From Program Management to the Final Punch!

Gresham Smith also provides program management services to Topre across their range of projects—from assisting them in the bid process to certifying progress payment applications and reviewing change orders. At the end of projects, we organize and coordinate the completion of all close-out documentation, including the final punch list and the Certificate of Substantial Completion.
