When The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) wished to create a new facility for women and infants, they turned to Gresham Smith—the design firm for more than 40 completed UAB projects. Connected directly to UAB’s North Pavilion by a pedestrian bridge, the UAB Women & Infants Center offers state-of-the-art technologies as well as access to a complete portfolio of acute care services.

Comprising labor and delivery, NICU, PACU, CCN and ORs, as well as a radiation and oncology center, the 610,000 square-foot, 10-floor, 224-bed facility offers the highest level of care for both routine and complex pregnancies, well and sick newborns, gynecological cancer, and a full spectrum of women’s services.
A Family-Focused Initiative

A Family-Focused Initiative

The facility offers the most modern C-section and post-anesthesia recovery suites available, as well as patient- and family-friendly rooms with accommodations for overnight stays for family members. This homelike setting plays out in other public spaces, including lounges, which feature computers, internet access and playrooms. The inclusion of a family hospitality center further supports patient and family needs.
The Power of Teamwork

The Power of Teamwork

As part of a design-build team, Gresham Smith had only three years to bring the project from design through construction completion. This short schedule was made possible through integrated project delivery as well as teamwork—with four Gresham Smith offices and several subcontractors and vendors needing information simultaneously in order to deliver the project according to the client’s schedule.

Playing an important role in the training of future generations of healthcare professionals, this world-class facility represents UAB’s commitment to improving the health and lives of the women and infants of Alabama and the surrounding region.
