Designed to meet the growing needs of families in the North Jacksonville area, Baptist North Medical Campus will provide full-service emergency care, diagnostic imaging, physician offices and wellness resources to the local community. Conveniently located near the interchange of Dunn Avenue and Interstate 295, the 40-acre campus is currently home to Baptist Emergency at North, a 28,000-square-foot freestanding emergency department (FSED) that brings emergency care out of the hospital and closer to home for the patients it serves.
Easily adapted to any number of sites throughout the Baptist Health system, the FSED’s flexible design caters to both adult and pediatric patients. The pediatric unit, where care is provided by staff from Wolfson Children’s Hospital, includes a separate waiting area for children that features high ceilings and a wall-sized, ocean-themed scene with colorful and calming sea creatures. Sixteen beds at initial buildout—eight adult and eight pediatric—are equally divided between each unit in separate pods that are connected by a centralized nurse station. Along with emergent care, the new facility provides on-site lab services and diagnostic imaging, including CT, MRI, X-ray and ultrasound. Child-specific medical equipment and imaging services are also available. The building was designed to facilitate future expansion with minimal disruption to existing services.
The GS&P-designed campus master plan also includes a 40,000-square-foot, three-story medical office building, which will house a 15,000-square-foot YMCA Healthy Living Center on the first floor when it opens in 2017. A partnership between Baptist Health and the YMCA, the Healthy Living Center will offer health screenings, nutrition classes and other medical programs and services. Also promoting a healthy lifestyle, a wheelchair- accessible quarter-mile walking trail serves as an integral part of the medical campus.
In keeping with the local context, the building’s exterior blends well with the semi-rural setting. The material choices, architectural details and scale of the building were specifically designed to reassure visitors they will receive the same level of emergency care as at any of Baptist of Northeast Florida’s hospitals.
Home to the system’s third GS&P-designed FSED, Baptist North Medical Campus offers state-of-the-art, patient-centered care to the North Jacksonville community with facilities that can adapt and expand in step with changing needs.
