For more than 30 years, GS&P has provided design services to Henrico Doctors’ Hospital for projects ranging from new construction to renovations. Looking to expand its cardiac care services, the HCA-affiliated hospital solicited GS&P to design a new state-of-the-art heart center as part of a five-year, $100 million expansion.
Designed with patient-centered care in mind, The Heart Center—located in Richmond, Virginia, on the hospital’s Forest campus—consists of a cardiac medical ICU and a cardiac surgical ICU, which have both increased from eight patient beds to 12. Each patient room is designed as a universal room featuring a private toilet and shower, a family zone with Wi-Fi access and an iPod dock, and separate staff work zones. Patient rooms also feature large windows that provide views of the surrounding landscape, while rich wood tones and colors from the natural environment are echoed in the soffits above the nurse stations and throughout the patient-care floor.
A curved corridor in the cardiac surgical ICU helps to create a less institutional feel and enhances patient safety by enabling all of the patient rooms to be seen from the nurses’ station. The rooms in this department include breakaway doors to accommodate the transportation of both patients and equipment.
Signifying the highest level of patient care, The Heart Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital greatly increases operational efficiencies while effectively supporting the community’s current and future cardiac care needs.
