For more than 15 years, GS&P has provided professional design services to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. When Memorial Healthcare System recognized the need to expand its existing open-bay NICU at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (located on MRH’s main campus) they called upon GS&P to provide space planning, architecture and interior design services. With a sound understanding of Memorial’s operational and staff needs, GS&P worked closely with JDCH to develop a design that supported the facility’s goal of creating a family-focused program while meeting the needs specific to a neonatal intensive care unit.

The 10,000-square-foot expansion features a 23-room single family room (SFR) addition to the renovated open-bay NICU, increasing the hospital’s level III NICU to a total of 64 beds. The private rooms were designed with mirrored headwalls, a mini-nurses’ station located between each pair of rooms, and a main nurses’ station at each end of the corridor. An indirect, soft lighting design was used to create a warm and relaxing environment. Recycled content in the rubber floors and a fully integrated digital communication system were used to quiet the patient environment. Amenities such as sofa beds and personal storage cabinets are provided in each patient room to allow for family members to stay comfortably overnight. A soothing theme of nature is enhanced by the serpentine curve of the corridor and the organic colors and patterns of the butterfly wings used in the flooring and cloud elements in the ornamental ceiling. In addition to patient rooms, the expansion included educational rooms, breast pump rooms, family waiting areas, as well as sibling waiting areas.

Adding 10,000 square feet to the facility’s second floor, the expansion of the Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit not only provides Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital with the additional space necessary to better serve the needs of a growing community, but also its staff. Along with the expansion, the project included 10,000 square feet of convertible office space on the third floor for 20 future NICU rooms, and 10,000 square feet of shelled support space on the hospital’s first floor.
