Referred to as Alabama’s first and only baby-friendly hospital, Regional Medical Center (RMC) Anniston delivers more than 1,600 newborns each year. When RMC determined to update its Anniston facility, it commissioned GS&P to provide professional design services for the addition of a 96,000-square-foot, three-story Women’s and Children’s Center, based on an extensive master plan developed by our firm.

The central orienting theme for the new facility is a striking two-story atrium that’s capped by a curved roof. Warm colors and materials as well as soft forms and lighting welcome patients and family members upon entering through the atrium’s expansive glass wall entrance. The 35-foot-high atrium leads visitors to the continuing-care nursery, which highlights shapes and colors in its design theme to symbolize the celebration of new life.

The comprehensive project included the relocation of pediatrics and OB/GYN, comprising eight private LDRs; two LDRP rooms; a C-section suite; 20 antepartum/postpartum rooms; and well-baby and continuing-care nurseries. GS&P’s efficient design of the nursing unit ultimately provided 62 single rooms, allowing privacy for both patients and family members.

Throughout the entire design of the Women’s and Children’s Center, detailed attention to the needs of women created a brand new image for Regional Medical Center Anniston. The project received the Best of Health Care Award from the International Interior Design Association-Alabama Chapter.
