Located on Eglin Air Force Base along Florida’s northwest Emerald Coast, Northwest Florida Regional Airport (VPS) was experiencing increased passenger volumes and suffered from a lack of identity. Airport administrators saw this situation as an opportunity to strengthen the airport’s brand as a convenient, less congested alternative with all of the amenities of a large airport.

GS&P teamed with VPS to take advantage of these opportunities by providing facility planning and comprehensive architectural and engineering design services for a new 110,000-square-foot passenger terminal. The design features high vaulted ceilings, terrazzo floors, gleaming white wall panels and an emerald green standing-seam roof. Passengers arriving landside are greeted by a fully landscaped park that doubles as a security buffer between parking and the terminal. The concourse provides seven gates, a variety of concessions, airline operation spaces and a conference center.

As passenger volumes continued to increase, GS&P was asked to provide the design for a three-gate concourse addition, a 50% increase in ticketing space, and a 100% increase in the size of the baggage claim area. The addition serves as an architectural punctuation to the original concourse, boasting an expansive vaulted rotunda with clerestory glass. This expansion also includes renovations to the security checkpoint and curbside baggage check and additional terminal restrooms.

The spacious facilities comfortably accommodate the increased passenger volumes while providing an overall enhanced passenger experience. The friendliness and cooperative attitude of airport employees was further enhanced by the new facility, and the pride in this beautiful accomplishment is obvious to everyone who visits.
