As part of a campuswide infrastructure redesign, Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) recognized the need for a new nine-story patient tower to replace aging facilities, enhance efficiency, and improve the patient experience. GS&P provided architecture, engineering, interior design and master planning services for the 300,000-square-foot Courtyard Tower, working with hospital administrators and the community to provide maximum value and fulfill the needs of patients, staff and administrators alike.

Wayfinding was a top priority since the existing facilities could be difficult to navigate. On the ground floor of Courtyard Tower the hospital’s new main entrance and lobby open to an exterior courtyard, which serves as a central point of orientation. Departments were strategically located to improve wayfinding and efficiency, and the nursing units link the tower’s upper floors directly with existing towers that were previously disconnected. New signage inside the facility and throughout SMH’s off-campus locations presents a consistent brand message.

GS&P also enhanced exterior wayfinding, reconfiguring drives, parking and patient drop-off and pick-up to relieve traffic congestion and improve the overall arrival experience. In addition to the main entrance, visitors can enter through dedicated entrances for the surgery center and emergency care center.

Programs housed in the replacement tower include a labor, delivery and recovery unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, a dedicated mother/baby postpartum floor, medical/surgical units, and admissions and pre-admission testing areas. SMH increased its number of private rooms while semiprivate rooms uniquely feature separate doors for each bed. Both private and semiprivate rooms are angled to take advantage of natural light and views of Sarasota’s picturesque waterfront and cityscape. All toilet rooms are accessible, and separate space is provided within the patient rooms to allow family members to be involved in their loved-one’s care.

Open and airy spaces, stunning terrazzo flooring, modern finishes and elegant lighting characterize main entrance lobby’s interior, creating a striking first impression. Patient floors feature the same warm, welcoming decor with simple wood grain finishes and natural colors creating a soothing experience. In keeping with the region’s modern style of architecture, Courtyard Tower’s exterior blends beautifully with the surrounding local context.

A valuable community asset, the replacement patient tower at Sarasota Memorial Hospital vastly improves patient care while attracting and retaining top-tier physicians, specialists, nursing staff and researchers.

“I am excited for our patients to experience the new accommodations, which represent a major step in our continual efforts to provide the best possible healthcare environment for the Sarasota region.”
