As the Tampa Bay area’s population grew over recent years, so did the demand for healthcare services. That increased demand signaled to Tampa General Hospital that it, too, must grow, and administrators called upon GS&P to design a five-level, 364,000-square-foot addition to its facility. Located on the northwest side of the hospital, the Bayshore Pavilion addition addresses the hospital’s short- and long-term needs.

Providing a larger, more comfortable facility for mothers in labor and women undergoing gynecological surgical procedures, the Women’s Center occupies Bayshore Pavilion’s fourth floor. The Center includes 21 spacious labor and delivery suites designed to feel more like bedrooms and featuring soft colors, wooden cabinets that conceal medical equipment, and private bathrooms and showers. To enhance its spa-like theme, each room has a large window with expansive waterfront views, as well as ample space for family members and a large built-in sofa bed.

GS&P’s design also comprises four OB surgical suites (for C-sections) that are large enough to accommodate multiple births; four GYN surgical suites; an ultrasound suite; an in vitro fertilization laboratory; 12 triage suites with space for in-the-womb surgery; a five-bed OB surgical recovery unit that supports family-centered couplet care; and two separate waiting areas—one for families of patients in labor, and one for families of patients undergoing surgery.

At approximately 4,600 square feet, the Women’s Center at Tampa General Hospital not only provides the extra space needed to expand the hospital’s services, but also offers a more nurturing and comfortable environment that encourages family involvement while meeting the high-tech requirements of modern medicine.

"Gresham, Smith and Partners’ leadership in a collaborative design process with Tampa General Hospital has created an inspiring environment customized to TGH's unique needs. The Design Team’s level of commitment through the life of the project and their ability to solve complex problems with creative solutions has made GS&P a trusted advisor to Tampa General Hospital. The Bayshore Pavilion’s bright open spaces, connection to nature and focus on patients’ comfort, dignity and safety have improved the experience for the patients, their families and our staff allowing Tampa General’s image to match its reputation as a state-of-the-art medical center."
