Taizhou Hospital Medical Center

Known for its rolling mountains and picturesque natural scenery, Taizhou is one of eight municipalities that make up the Yangtze River Economic Belt. When Enze Medical Group, owner and operator of Taizhou Hospital, sought a replacement hospital in the burgeoning coastal city, they launched a global design competition challenging architects around the world to develop a design concept that met several key goals. These included a hospital design that fully embraces the surrounding landscape and local culture while meeting the growing community’s increasing demand for integrated and advanced healthcare services.

Inspired by traditional Chinese garden structure, GS&P’s conceptual design forges a strong connection etween the new hospital and the site’s surrounding topography while providing patients and visitors with a sense of comfort and cultural familiarity. The innovative layout was designed for development in two separate phases. Phase I comprises an area of 162,000 square meters, with a 1,200-bed capacity. A phase II extension encompasses 193,000 square meters, with a 1,100-bed capacity.

To simplify orientation and wayfinding throughout the large facility, the conceptual design combines vertical and horizontal circulation and fully considers the integrality of phases I and II to maximize efficiency of operation. To improve flow and effectively prevent and control the occurrence of cross-infection, outpatient, inpatient, staff, soiled materials, physical screening and emergency entrance circulations are separated.

To maximize views of the natural landscape, designers carefully oriented the building massing in response to the local context, offering the majority of patient rooms scenic vistas of the neighboring mountains and nearby Yangtze River. Skylights and courtyards bring natural light and ventilation into the buildings. A landscaped garden terrace provides space for social interaction and relaxation, while the parklike setting, replete with a jogging trail, a healing garden and a soothing waterfall feature, creates an aesthetically pleasing environment for patients and visitors alike.

To reduce energy consumption and operating costs, sustainable initiatives such as green roofs, high-performance glass and a compact building massing were incorporated into the conceptual design. The use of locally sourced building materials, such as stone on the medical center’s façade, will further decrease the project’s impact on the local environment.

Slated for construction on a 355,000-square-meter greenfield site, the new $2.28 billion Taizhou Hospital Medical Center will provide unrivaled medical services to residents of Zhejiang Province and its surrounding region while setting a new standard for future hospital design. The program includes diagnostic and treatment facilities, acute care, ICU, an emergency department, an outpatient department, physical and functional exam rooms, a division of infectious diseases, as well as administration, research and education facilities.
