Gresham Smith has been awarded a five-year contract to implement the Georgia Department of Transportation’s new vision for regional signal management called SigOps. The firm is one of three consultant teams that will support GDOT and local agencies in the Atlanta area with this innovative new traffic signal operations program.

Referred to as SigOps, GDOT’s new signal management approach leverages technology to expand the number of actively managed traffic signals in Metro Atlanta. Gresham Smith is responsible for proactive management and maintenance of about 1,400 signals in the western portion of the contract, which covers north and south Fulton County, Cobb County, Douglas County and Clayton County.

The overarching goal of the project is to use existing and emerging technology to make travel more safe and efficient whether it’s during rush hour, a major planned sporting event or an unexpected incident that disrupts traffic flow. The project team will analyze traffic patterns and make constant adjustments to traffic signal operations to improve traffic flow.

“We’re thrilled to support GDOT in the next evolution of their cutting-edge signal operations program that will provide a safe, efficient and well-maintained traffic signal system,” said Jody Braswell, P.E., Georgia state transportation leader at Gresham Smith. “The innovative SigOps program will allow us to support both GDOT and local agency partners as they work together to make the most of their traffic signal infrastructure to improve travel for residents and visitors alike.”
