To meet the needs of one of the fastest-growing veterans populations in the country, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is adding a new outpatient clinic to the Hampton VA Healthcare System. Partnering with The Molasky Group of Companies, developer, and WM Jordan, general contractor, on the design-build project, Gresham Smith is providing architecture and interior design services to create a human-centered space that uses the latest technology to elevate quality of care. At nearly 200,000 square feet, the facility will serve veterans in Hampton Roads, Virginia, both now and in the future.

Care Closer to Home

Care Closer to Home

Located on a 25-acre site at the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center campus near the Cypress Landing veterans Housing, the new facility will reduce travel times for patients by eliminating the Hampton Roads and Monitor-Merrimack Bridge-tunnels from the equation. Patient parking at the front of the site will enable easy access for visitors, while dedicated staff parking and entry on the rear of the building will increase efficiencies.
Coastal Connections

Coastal Connections

The 196,000-square-foot, two-story building will reflect the surrounding region, taking cues from coastal culture to honor Hampton Roads as the home to the world’s largest naval base. On the exterior, a large linear expanse of glazing will mimic the shape of an aircraft carrier, while the covered drop-off area on the front of the building will resemble ship masts.
Embracing the Outdoors

Embracing the Outdoors

To promote wellness and connect patients, visitors and staff to nature, the design will capitalize on the existing wetlands to create outdoor seating areas, al-fresco dining and a healing garden in a park-like setting. Staff will have access to a dedicated outdoor space and multiple balconies for respite during breaks. To create further connections to nature, the interior palette will use cool earth tones and wood elements throughout the design. Additionally, floor-to ceiling windows in the main lobby, combined with large windows on all sides of the building, will flood the space with natural light.
An Emphasis on Efficiency

An Emphasis on Efficiency

The 196,000-square-foot space will house primary care, audiology and speech pathology, mental health, ophthalmology, and prosthetic and sensory aid services. The clinic will also feature a lab and pharmacy, as well as CT, X-Ray, mammography, MRI and ultrasound technologies. To increase operational efficiencies and elevate the level of personal care patients receive, patient care spaces will be arranged around central staff work areas within each clinic. Additionally, strategic signage and wayfinding elements, as well as a main corridor on each floor that connects patients to all clinics, will help patients navigate the facility with ease.
Expanding Care for the Community

Expanding Care for the Community

When complete, the new outpatient clinic in Hampton Roads, Virginia, will be better suited to meet the growing needs of veterans in the area, expanding current care and adding new services. Construction is expected to start in 2022, and the facility is expected to open to the public in fall of 2024.
