Gresham Smith-Designed Expansion at Miami Valley Hospital South Completes in Ohio

June 7, 2019

Gresham Smith is proud to announce the completion of an expansion and renovation at Miami Valley Hospital South, a member of Premier Health Partners, in Centerville, Ohio. The new joint and spine center with expanded sports medicine, sports performance and pain center services is part of a long-term vision for the hospital, creating an orthopedic center that serves patients close to home.

“Our orthopedic team at Miami Valley Hospital South ranks in the top 10 percent nationwide by many measures,” commented Joann Ringer, vice president and chief operating officer at Miami Valley Hospital South. “Gresham Smith created a space that provides the resources our staff need to continue delivering the highest level of care for the Centerville community, helping our patients continue participating in the activities they care about.”

“Throughout the project, our team focused on creating a customized, state-of-the-art environment equipped with the latest technology, while also designing an adaptable space that can change as technology and treatment methods evolve,” commented Penny Houchens, IIDA, NCIDQ, senior interior designer at Gresham Smith.  “From initial assessment and preventative care to surgery and rehabilitation, the new orthopedic center at Miami Valley Hospital South is truly a one stop shop, providing comprehensive care under one roof.”

The 170,000-square-foot, six-story addition blends seamlessly into the existing façade, matching the five-story patient tower addition the Gresham Smith team designed in 2007. The orthopedic center’s new two-story lobby features a sleek glass elevator and escalators, while floor to ceiling windows provide natural light. The design team used a palette of cool greys and blues, dark woods and metallics to create a warm, hospitality-like environment, enhancing the experience for patients and family members.

The center features six new operating rooms and 20 additional inpatient beds. A centrally located physician office area adjacent to the operating rooms allows all orthopedic doctors and surgeons to work together in the same space, enhancing communication and elevating patient care. The expansion also features a new sports medicine and rehab program that will care for athletes across the region.

In addition to the expansion, the Gresham Smith team designed a 42,000-square-foot renovation to the hospital’s emergency medicine, cardiology and primary care services and added the facility’s first cardiac catheterization lab.
