Gresham Smith Takes Home Two ASCE Nashville Branch Awards

April 22, 2019

Gresham Smith had double the fun at the American Society of Civil Engineers Nashville Branch’s 2019 Awards dinner on Thursday, April 18, taking home two awards. Gresham Smith’s innovative expansion of the Metro Nashville Main Public Library’s parking garage was honored as the top “Large Outstanding Engineering Project,” while Civil Engineer Dustin Scruggs, P.E., was named “Young Engineer of the Year.” The Outstanding Engineering Project Award honors a project that has exceeded the needs of owners, bettered the community and pushed the engineering profession forward, while the Young Engineer Award is given to an engineer under the age of 35 who has made significant contributions to the organization.

“At Gresham Smith, we pride ourselves on our genuine, down-to-earth people who produce creative and effective solutions. These two awards demonstrate that our people are truly our greatest asset, and when they succeed our projects succeed,” said Al Pramuk, chairman and CEO, Gresham Smith. “We are honored to have won two awards from the ASCE Nashville Branch. Congratulations to the entire Nashville Public Library Garage project team and Dustin on their well-deserved honors.”

Located in the heart of downtown, the Metro Nashville Main Public Library needed additional parking space to keep pace with the city’s rapid growth. By implementing a state-of-the-art steel solution, the project team designed a three-story vertical expansion on top of the existing structure and added 350 additional parking spaces to the garage. Gresham Smith also worked with the project architect to install large, colorful panels on the exterior, blending the new steel structure and the existing concrete garage together seamlessly.

Dustin Scruggs joined Gresham Smith’s Land Planning market in 2017 and has more than nine years of professional experience. He has worked on the Oxford Commons development in Antioch, Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro and he currently serves as the civil engineer-of-record for the 600,000-square-foot Ramsey Solutions Headquarters in Franklin, Tenn., future home to financial guru Dave Ramsey’s team. In addition to his many accomplishments at Gresham Smith, Dustin has made significant impacts through his involvement with ASCE’s Nashville Branch, helping to restructure the branch and serving as its treasurer for six years. He is also active with the Meeting Committee, Budget Committee, Endowment Committee, and he oversees the Scholarship Committee and Sustaining Membership Committee.

The American Society of Engineers Nashville Branch’s annual awards program recognizes outstanding individuals and civil engineering projects in the Nashville area. A selection committee, comprised of Branch officers and past award winners, reviewed and selected this year’s award winners.
