February 11, 2019

Gresham Smith announces that architect Robert Barfield, AIA, CCCA will serve on the AIA-AGC Joint Committee, a partnership between the American Institute of Architects and Associated General Contractors. He has served on the committee for the past four years and will serve another three year term working to build strong relationships between architects and contractors.

“Robert is very committed to collaborative design and construction. Through this appointment he’s able to bring his extensive construction administration experience and cooperative design approach to address industry concerns,” commented Dave King, AIA, regional vice president at Gresham Smith. “We are proud to have him represent Gresham Smith and the industry.”

“In order to advance the built environment, it’s imperative that the industry takes an integrated approach,” said Barfield. “I started working on construction sites before I could drive and have continued to work in construction administration throughout my career. Each day I work closely with contractors, so being a part of this committee fits well with how I practice. I’m excited to continue working with my fellow committee members, who are talented and passionate about working together to better the places we live and work.”

During his time serving on the committee, Barfield has been instrumental in implementing the “Walk a Day in my Shoes” program which was created to encourage empathy between architects and contractors and provide a deeper understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities. The committee is comprised of 11 architects and 11 contractors. The partnership supports collaboration, provides a forum for the exchange of information on matters of mutual concern to architects and contractors as well as represents and advances the positions, views and goals of the AGC Building Division and the AIA.
