To better serve the growing number of expecting mothers in the greater Richmond area, Bon Secours decided to expand the mother/infant unit at St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian, Virginia. With an understanding that welcoming a new baby is a life-changing, and often overwhelming, experience, Gresham Smith sought to design a space that reduces stress and leads to a more relaxing stay. We provided architecture, interior design and wayfinding services for the 23,000-square-foot space, which features amenities that create a calm comfortable experience for families and a layout that promotes care team collaboration, ultimately elevating the experience for new parents and their little ones.

The renovated space complements the existing hospital, using large windows and a neutral color palette accented by blues and greens to create connections to nature. Spacious, private patient rooms are full of amenities, including private bathrooms, space for baby’s bassinet and amenities—such as sleeper sofas, recliners and charging outlets—for visiting friends and family members. Additionally, custom casework reduces clutter and provides dedicated storage for a car seat, suitcases and baby belongings. The unit also includes a transitional nursery with space for procedures, a family room, a patient education classroom and a lactation support suite.
In addition to new families, the space also cares for caregivers with centralized, open nurse stations that encourage collaboration, as well as individual and team work rooms and computers for in-room charting. A staff lounge, respite room and locker room provide separate spaces for recharging.
