For more than three decades, Gresham Smith has provided design services to Henrico Doctors’ Hospital for projects ranging from new construction to renovations. Looking to expand the hospital’s cardiac care services, the HCA-affiliated hospital solicited us to design The Heart Center at their Forest Campus as part of a five-year, $100 million expansion that effectively supports the community’s current and future cardiac care needs.

Bringing the Outside In

Bringing the Outside In

The positive effects of sunlight, views, gardens and the human touch were guiding principles in the facility’s design. By “dissolving” the exterior walls of the building through the use of glass in the center’s ED and waiting area, we reinforced a nature theme, bringing the outdoors in to create a calming environment. Patient rooms include large windows that provide access to views of the surrounding areas, while the same rich wood tones and natural colors are echoed in the soffits above the nurse stations and throughout the patient-care floor.
Universal Appeal

Universal Appeal

Supporting The Heart Center’s commitment to excellence in cardiac care, the state-of-the-art facility includes a cardiac medical intensive care unit and a cardiac surgical ICU. The expansion increased both ICUs from eight patient beds to 12. All rooms are universal, which means less patient movement from one department to another.
Ahead of the Curve

Ahead of the Curve

A curved corridor in the cardiac surgical ICU makes the space feel less institutional and enhances patient safety by allowing all patient rooms to be seen from the nurses’ station. The rooms in this department include breakaway doors to accommodate the transportation of both patients and equipment.
Putting Patients First

Putting Patients First

Signifying the highest level of patient care, The Heart Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital greatly increases operational efficiencies while providing a healing and restorative environment for patients and their loved ones.
