Delivering a New Substation for a Growing Community

To accommodate for rising power demands in the growing community of Springfield, Tennessee, Gresham Smith assisted Springfield Electric with the demolition and upgrading of its existing 69:13kv substation. The transmission line portion of the project includes detailed design for the relocation of an existing 69kV transmission line and addition of two feeder ties into the new substation. Final design also included grounding and static protection plans, detailed construction documents for the physical facility, secondary oil containment plans, wiring, and schematic drawings. Material specifications were developed for the breakers, transformer and relay enclosure, and complete construction specifications were developed for the overall substation construction. Gresham Smith staff also evaluated and made recommendations to the owner on construction bid documents, reviewed material submittals, and coordinated with other utilities. Staff will continue to provide on-site assistance during construction, which is expected to be complete in 2027.
