Gresham Smith is proud to announce the official opening of Tennessee Oncology’s new flagship cancer care center in Midtown Nashville. Tennessee Oncology treats nearly half of the cancer patients in the Volunteer state.
The $120 million, 192,000-square-foot facility brings together a unique partnership of investors in cancer care, setting a new precedent for patient-centered, research-driven treatment in an urban environment. The opening marks a major milestone in the organization’s nearly 50-year legacy of delivering high-quality, compassionate cancer care throughout Tennessee.
Designed to deliver seamless care, the facility consolidates four of the practice’s clinics into a comprehensive hub offering medical oncology, infusion, hematology, imaging, pharmacy, and related clinical services. The design enhances care coordination, supports staff well-being, and streamlines patient access under one roof.
“This project represents a bold reimagining of how cancer care can be delivered in an urban setting,” said Gresham Smith’s Healthcare Senior Designer Steve Verner. “The new facility unites multiple specialties and research functions under one roof with centralized support functions that standardize and streamline processes, prioritize safety, and provide adaptability/flexibility for both patients and providers. It’s a great example of how design can help solve real challenges to create a healing environment.
Located at 322 22nd Avenue North between Centennial Medical Center and Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown, the new facility embraces its urban context with pedestrian-friendly access, valet entry, three levels of underground parking totaling an additional 118,000sf, and a ground-level layout tailored to the city. Features include a rooftop terrace for staff respite, a green roof and bioswales for sustainable stormwater management, and shell space for future ground-floor retail, such as a café.
Later this year, the center will welcome the Greco Hainsworth Centers for Research Drug Development Unit, which will significantly expand clinical research capabilities in Tennessee.
In early 2026, the building will house the national headquarters of OneOncology, Tennessee Oncology’s national management services partner.
Interior spaces draw inspiration from Nashville’s neighborhoods, reinforcing community connections while supporting privacy, safety, and workflow efficiency. The facility highlights the role of forward-thinking design and private investment in the future of healthcare infrastructure, representing a new model for cancer care: integrated, adaptable, and deeply rooted in community-focused design.
