Gresham Smith is pleased to announce that Michael Varner has been selected as the transportation systems management and operations (TSMO) services leader for the Transportation market effective January 1, 2026.
Varner fills the role as current TSMO Service Leader Matt D’Angelo transitions into the role of Transportation Executive Vice President, also effective January 1, 2026. In his new role, Varner will lead the strategy for the TSMO service line, drive geographic growth and identify new market opportunities in collaboration with leadership across the market.
“Michael has a track record of serving as a strategic business partner with our clients to advance TSMO solutions,” D’Angelo said. “We look forward to his thought leadership as he guides the future of our TSMO services and cultivates new career opportunities for our people.”
Michael brings more than two decades of experience leading transportation programs across the United States. Since his arrival at Gresham Smith in 2024, Varner has made a major impact as Georgia TSMO leader and the expansion of the market’s practice into North Carolina.
“I’m honored to lead our TSMO team and build upon the strong foundation Matt and so many others have established,” Varner said. “As we continue to grow our geographic reach, we’ll remain focused on delivering innovative, data-driven solutions that improve the way people move through their communities by collaborating with clients to shape the future of transportation operations across the country.”
Varner holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology from Georgia Southern University and is based in Gresham Smith’s Midtown Atlanta office. He joins Gresham Smith Transportation services leaders in bridge, consultancy, planning and utilities.
