When General Motors and LG Energy Solution teamed up in 2019 to create what will become the largest battery plant of its kind in the United States, they called on Gresham Smith to bring their vision to life. With a new joint venture called Ultium Cells, GM and LG Energy Solution plan to invest up to $2.3 billion to build a 2.8 million square-foot lithium-ion electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing plant in Lordstown, Ohio, that’s expected to create more than 1,100 jobs. We are delivering full design services as well as engineering and commissioning via the Integrated Project Delivery model. The facility is expected to open in 2022.

An Electric Future

An Electric Future

Stretching across 156 acres, the plant will occupy more than 2.8 million square feet of total floor area, and it will have an annual capacity of more than 30 gigawatt hours with room to grow. The Ultium batteries will be used to power the new third-generation global electric vehicle platform that will be used in a number of new GM’s electric vehicles.
