Gresham Smith worked with Artemed Group, a healthcare provider that operates numerous hospitals and senior facilities in Germany, to design their first hospital in China. Located in China’s Shanghai Free Trade Zone, the 200-bed hospital serves the medical needs of both public and private patients with the goal of providing high quality care at a reasonable cost. Our efficient operations and management model was designed to be replicated on projects throughout the country.

Artemed China FTZ Hospital focuses primarily on orthopedic in- and outpatient care with four specialty departments: trauma and sports medicine, large joints, spine and rehabilitation. The facility features carefully choreographed relationships between the ED, ICU, Surgery and Imaging departments with dedicated circulation. The ED exam rooms are standardized and co-located with the clinic exam rooms, enabling the hospital to flex to respond to peak volumes.

rendering of hospital lobby

The two-story lobby is designed to maximize intuitive wayfinding. Major public destination points like registration, outpatient clinics, imaging and outpatient surgery are organized around the lobby. Automated registration booths alongside the staffed registration area will reduce the congestion that is common in many Chinese hospitals.

The hospital provides 24/7 emergency services for orthopedic related injuries with six operating rooms. On-site support facilities include radiology, lab, blood bank and pharmacy. The medical imaging center and blood testing lab are equipped with advanced medical devices such as a PET/MRI and capable of providing services to other local hospitals and patients. For this reason, a separate entrance provides direct access to the imaging center from the outside.
