More than one million travelers pass through Blue Grass Airport (LEX) on an annual basis. Amid this passenger growth, LEX needed a design consultant to lead it through the changes that would enable the airport to better serve their expanding customer base. For more than a decade, Gresham Smith has partnered with LEX on a series of aesthetic and functional improvements that are linked to the airport’s long-term master plan, which anticipates continued increases in the volumes of passengers, vehicles and cargo moving in and out of the airport.

Initially, Gresham Smith designed and oversaw the conversion of six independent manual baggage make-up systems into one fully automatic system with two in-line CTX 5500 Explosive Detection System devices and four Electronic Trace Detection stations to help the airport comply with federal mandates. Since then, we’ve provided planning, program definition, design, budget estimates, construction phasing and construction administration services for a series of terminal renovations. Additional projects include a concourse addition, public parking structure, air cargo building, rental car structure, ramp addition and upgraded curbside signage.
