Following the initiation of the first public-private hospital partnership between the Chinese government and a U.S. majority-owned and operated healthcare provider, Chinaco Healthcare Corporation (CHC) contracted Gresham Smith to design a new acute care hospital in Cixi, China—a city of more than 2 million residents within the sub-provincial city of Ningbo, Zhejiang.

Partnering with the Shanghai Institute of Architectural Design and Research (SIADR) and the City of Cixi, Gresham Smith designed the new 880,000-square-foot hospital with flexibility, sustainability and the overall staff and user experience in mind. The design not only supports improved operational processes but also enhanced patient and public flow to better serve a dynamically changing community.
