The primary goal of the Terminal 3 modernization project is to provide travelers with a modern, efficient, and visually appealing facility. One major improvement is the full redesign of passenger circulation, creating clear separation between arriving and departing travelers. This separation streamlines movement, reduces congestion during peak times, and shortens waits at ticketing and security by eliminating wayfinding conflicts. Most retail and dining options have been relocated post-security, with additional offerings added to enhance the passenger experience once they clear screening. The overall interior aesthetic of the terminal has also been significantly improved; Gresham Smith redesigned and expanded restrooms, replaced all wall and ceiling finishes, installed new terrazzo flooring, and implemented updated wayfinding features to create a polished and cohesive look that aligns with the broader FLL terminal modernization vision.

Beyond the aesthetic and functional improvements, the project also delivered a new central utility plant with expanded capacity and a ground boarding holdroom, giving the airport greater operational flexibility. That same emphasis on flexibility guided the project’s delivery; construction began before the COVID19 pandemic and, as passenger volumes declined in March 2020, Gresham Smith collaborated with BCAD and the project team to rework the phasing plan. By temporarily closing an entire concourse instead of sequencing work in smaller phases, the team accelerated construction and minimized operational impacts.

By integrating aviation-specific architectural, interior, and engineering solutions, the design transforms Terminal 3 into a modern, efficient, and visually cohesive space that enhances the overall passenger journey at FLL. With a focus on streamlined passenger processing, improved facilities, and upgraded amenities, the Terminal 3 modernization project ensures that Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport continues to deliver a uniform design standard across the airport, while meeting the evolving needs of travelers and supporting the airport’s international and domestic growth.
