As one of Georgia’s top-ranked small hospitals, Adventist Health System’s Gordon Hospital (now known as AdventHealth Gordon) quickly outgrew their existing facility. Hospital officials understood that the built environment has the ability to influence a patient’s mind, body and spirit and knew they needed more space to better serve the Calhoun community. Gresham Smith designed a three-story expansion to the hospital’s emergency department and intensive care unit, as well as renovations to the hospital’s lobby and waiting spaces, providing the latest in patient-centered care while creating an efficient base for future growth and expansion.

At the beginning of the design process, Gordon Hospital established four primary goals for the project: create a positive, healing environment for patients and staff; improve operational efficiencies; add advanced technologies to the hospital’s toolbox; and provide greater capacity for future growth. The three-story expansion doubled the size of the existing emergency department, bringing the space’s total exam, resuscitation and behavioral health room count to 33. The new 20,000-square-foot, 10-bed intensive care unit and 24-bed progressive care unit, combined with a new CT suite, allow Gordon Hospital to provide the latest in patient-centered care.

Gordon Hospital asked us to add advanced technologies to their toolbox, so our team designed medical, communications and wireless systems to anticipate future technological advances and upgrades. Additionally, a cutting-edge tracking system helps the hospital manage patients, staff, materials and equipment.
