Landscape Architecture, Planning

Where the stately stone-and-brick Mercy Academy Catholic High School once stood watch over Louisville’s East Broadway for more than a century, now stands Highland Station—a brand-new luxury apartment complex located in the heart of the Original Highlands neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky.

Gresham Smith’s Land Planning group worked closely with the architect and developer to deliver a distinctive design that enhances—and is responsible to—the neighborhood’s unique historic character.

Revitalizing the Neighborhood

Built in 1901 and demolished in 2016, Mercy Academy had fallen into disrepair over the years and sat vacant for almost a decade. Highland Station brings the once-abandoned property to life with a four-story luxury apartment complex that comprises 195 apartment units and common amenities, including a clubroom, pool, courtyards, a theater/multipurpose room, a business center and fitness facilities.

A Transformative Project

Along with providing planning, civil engineering and landscape architecture services, Gresham Smith’s Land Planning group also led the entitlements process for the client team, which resulted in the project being approved by the Louisville Metro Planning Commission.

Revitalizing the 3-acre site on Louisville’s East Broadway, this multifamily residential, urban infill project transforms the property into an upscale apartment community while paying homage aesthetically to Mercy Academy and its convent buildings.
