Gresham Smith is proud to partner with the Horry County Department of Airports on the Concourse Expansion and Modernization project at Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR). Designed to accommodate growing passenger volumes and enhance the traveler experience, the project expands Concourse A with six new gates and infrastructure for a future seventh, while transforming existing terminal spaces to reflect the vibrant character of the Myrtle Beach community.
“This expansion is a milestone for MYR and for the entire Grand Strand,” said Judi Olmstead, Director of Airports for Horry County. “Through our partnership with Gresham Smith, we’ve created a concourse that celebrates the beauty of our region, enhances operational efficiency, and elevates the passenger experience.”
“Supporting MYR in delivering a high-quality, regionally-inspired concourse that welcomes millions of travelers each year has been a privilege,” said Gresham Smith Senior Vice President Brad Sucher, AIA. “The expansion allows for smoother operations today while enabling flexibility for the future. It truly sets the stage for continued growth.”
The concourse addition creates 50,000 square feet of new space featuring spacious holdrooms with panoramic airfield views, powered seating, and expanded food, beverage, and retail options. Large clerestory windows and a predominantly glass façade maximize natural light, while electrochromic glazing reduces glare and heat throughout the day. Durable terrazzo flooring, glass wall cladding, and custom planters filled with natural greenery bring a timeless, coastal-inspired aesthetic that welcomes travelers to South Carolina’s Grand Strand.
In addition to architectural upgrades, the modernization delivers passenger-focused enhancements throughout the existing terminal. All interior wayfinding and signage systems have been updated to align with the enhanced design and ensure a clear, consistent visual language across the concourse. Travelers will also find new restroom facilities that establish the benchmark for all future renovations, integrating upgraded materials and thoughtful functionality to elevate the overall passenger experience.
