Sarasota Bradenton International Airport Terminal Expansion and Modernization Honored by AIA Florida

SRQ Project Recognized for Design Excellence in Renovations and Additions

Gresham Smith is proud to announce that the firm has received a Citation Award of Excellence for Renovations and Additions from AIA Florida for the design of the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) Terminal Expansion and Modernization project in Sarasota, Florida. The award honors architectural projects that skillfully update, expand or repurpose existing structures.

One of the fastest-growing airports in the United States, with passenger numbers tripling in just a few years, SRQ needed a long-term solution that would immediately boost capacity while integrating seamlessly with future expansion plans. Gresham Smith’s design expands holdroom capacity, enhances concession opportunities, and improves passenger flow, while also positioning the terminal for a future concourse connection.

The project includes a five-gate, 75,400-square-foot addition served by a dedicated four-lane security checkpoint. Beyond security, a bright, double-height connector hall brings together concessions and flexible seating and opens to panoramic airfield views through an expansive glass curtainwall. Designed as a future-ready hub, the connector hall is planned to serve as the link to the airport’s future elevated Concourse A, helping reduce disruption as additional phases move forward.

Throughout the new spaces, the terminal experience is elevated with warm materials, integrated lighting, and branded elements that reflect The Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority’s identity. Holdrooms were planned to support both passenger comfort and airport operations, with clear gate zones, intuitive wayfinding and convenient access to amenities including restrooms, a mother’s room and pet relief areas. New escalators were also implemented to improve passenger flow.
