Gresham Smith is proud to announce that members of the firm’s Healthcare market will speak at the 2025 Healthcare Design Conference and Expo in Kansas City, Missouri. Gresham Smith Healthcare Market Design Leader Chris Hoal, AIA, Healthcare Studio Design Leader Reid Cimala, AIA, Healthcare Architects Ellen Fuson, AIA, and Patrick Gerhart, AIA, and Land Planning Landscape Architect Elizabeth Tinsley will be exploring the site design at Baptist Health Care Brent Lane Campus and architectural visualization with artificial intelligence.

Site Design of Baptist Pensacola Hospital: The Hospital in a Park
Presented by Chris Hoal, AIA, Elizabeth Tinsley, John Porter
Baptist Health Care Pensacola’s (BHCP) Brent Lane Campus, a Healthcare Design 2024 Merit Award winner, is an example of how campus planning creates a meaningful sense of place with public space and architecture that contributes positively to the fabric of the city. The distinguishing feature of the 47-acre brownfield site are the many live oaks and magnolias, some 6 feet in diameter and more than 200 years old. Instead of clear cutting the property, the design team proposed to organize the entire campus around the groves. The design sprang from a radical but simple idea: “What if we put a park where the parking lot usually goes?” Project designers share how the concept for the site plan was conceived, pitched to the steering committee, and aligned with the mission-driven care model of BHCP. Speakers share insights from a post-occupancy evaluation by using space syntax to measure visibility and walkability to biophilic design features and comparing Biophilic Design Matrix scores to those from the health system’s old facility.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will learn the guiding principles for medical campus planning broadly and then how they were applied to this project specifically.
- Participants will learn how a facility of this size could be organized around nature, creating a meaningful sense of place for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Participants will learn how biophilic design elements can positively impact key performance indicators related to patient outcomes and staff experience.
- Participants will be able to articulate evidence-based design strategies for incorporating biophilic design elements within healthcare facilities.
Architectural Visualization with Artificial Intelligence
Presented by Chris Hoal, AIA, Reid Cimala, AIA, Ellen Fuson, AIA, and Patrick Gerhart, AIA
The landscape of Al visualization tools changes every month. Those who know how to use it are already reaping the rewards, but Al image and video generation programs will be table stakes for designers in only a few years. Architects can leverage Al to routinely increase the speed of idea generation, explore design visions with clients, create stellar graphics, and convey design experiences through immersive Al generated video. This discussion will provide participants with an understanding of how Al image and video generation can be added to their toolbox in practice and demystify this innovative technology. Are you curious about how Al can enhance your design practice, but do not know where to start? Join us for an interactive discussion that demystifies generative Al and empowers you to create with confidence. With expert guidance from our presenters, you will learn how to use image and video creation tools to enhance your designs and streamline your workflow.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will receive an overview of the landscape of Al tools available to architects today. We will compare the advantages of different “text to image” tools like Mid journey, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion and “image to video” tools like Runway, Kling, and Luma.
- Participants will gain a clear understanding of how Al integrates into a design process – including visioning, concept design, rapid prototyping, and immersive story telling.
- Participants will gain experience with Al image and video tools as the attendees of the session collaboratively produce a shared design concept.
- Participants will see examples of competition level Al images and video content produced by the speakers and discuss a range of possible applications for the technology.
