Gresham Smith Celebrates Completion of Brooks Rehabilitation Bartram Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility

June 27, 2022

Gresham Smith is proud to announce that construction on the new Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital – Bartram Campus is complete and the facility is open to patients. The three-story, 76,000-square-foot hospital will improve both the healing environment and quality of care delivered to patients.

Equipped to care for higher acuity patients, the inpatient hospital was designed for those who have experienced a stroke, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, brain injury and other orthopedic conditions. The space features 60 patient beds, with the flexibility to expand to 90 beds in the future, as well as a therapy courtyard, two gyms, a four-bay dialysis suite, an activities of daily living suite, a pharmacy with chemotherapy compounding capabilities and access to outdoor patios on every floor. Additionally, the inpatient rehabilitation hospital features eight negative air pressure rooms to contain airborne illnesses.

The Brooks Bartram campus currently includes a 100-bed skilled nursing facility, a three-story, 61-unit assisted living facility and two GREEN HOUSE® 12-bed memory care homes to provide specialized services for the aging population. When it opened nearly 10 years ago, the campus was planned to accommodate Brooks’ future growth. Adding a rehabilitation hospital provides a continuum of post-acute services in this one location, making it a convenient option for patients, residents and guests.

“Through education and research, we have learned about the true needs of patients who are recovering from severe injuries, and we have delivered a facility that will holistically support their healing journey,” said Senior Interior Designer Beth Hiltonen, IIDA, LEED AP, NCIDQ. “As medical care for higher acuity patients continues to advance, Gresham Smith will continue to push the envelope on how we design rehabilitation facilities. By incorporating new technologies and a smart floor plan, the patients at Brooks Rehabilitation’s new Bartram Campus hospital will benefit from this new space.”

Since half of a rehabilitation patient’s typical day is spent focusing on active therapy, and the other half is spent on rest and recovery, it was important that the interior design distinctly separated the areas of the facility and their uses. In the active therapy spaces, such as the gym and day room, a vibrant and stimulating color scheme, graphics and messaging evoke movement and energy. Conversely, the patient room design was inspired by Naturalist William Bartram’s artwork, and the calming color palette and subject matter evoke a feeling of peace to promote relaxation.

Filled with technology to assist patients in both comfort and recovery, the new inpatient rehabilitation facility includes electrochromic self-shading glass to reduce solar heat gain and glare, a specifically designed gait corridor with ceiling track for patients re-learning to walk and a robotic exoskeleton that can sense electrical impulses and automatically adjust the level of assistance given to patients.

This project is a continuation of Gresham Smith’s 20-year partnership with Brooks Rehabilitation.
