Gresham Smith Completes Wastewater Master Plan for City of Grand Prairie, Texas
Gresham Smith is proud to announce the completion of a wastewater master plan for the City of Grand Prairie, Texas. The firm assessed the condition and capacity of the City’s 600-mile pipeline system and developed a comprehensive wastewater collection system capital improvement program to accommodate growth and development through the year 2045.

Located within the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex, the City is served by two regional wastewater systems–Trinity River Authority’s (TRA) Central Regional Wastewater System and Mountain Creek Regional Wastewater System—which collectively serve more than 24 cities. Wastewater from Grand Prairie is measured through a network of meter stations to identify the proportionate use of the regional wastewater system’s service, for which the City pays that portion of the cost for TRA’s operation.
Gresham Smith assessed pipelines of various sizes, ranging up to 48 inches in diameter, to identify projected capacity deficiencies in the existing system, as well as infiltration and inflow that could be mitigated to reduce the City’s share of wastewater costs. The team created a hydraulic model of the existing wastewater collection system for the assessment, incorporating population projections for the next five, 10 and 20 years to assess capacity needs. Then, Gresham Smith developed a plan for completing necessary upgrades, with a focus on accessing federal funding to reduce future system costs.
Concurrently, Gresham Smith conducted several specialized detail studies, including a sanitary sewer evaluation survey of a 100-year-old, 54-mile portion the City’s collection system, an onsite assessment of more than 17 lift stations, and a systemwide asset management system to define a rate of expenditures needed to maintain the City’s existing wastewater infrastructure service life expectations.
This project is a continuation of Gresham Smith’s relationship with the City of Grand Prairie. The firm previously completed a wastewater service plan for two city parks and multiple residential and commercial developments, as well as a sanitary sewer overflow initiative plan update.
