October 20, 2022

Gresham Smith is excited to announce that the firm has been selected to design a new state-of-the-art, five-story, 207,000-square-foot ambulatory medical center for Cooper Green Mercy Health Services Authority in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. The new medical facility will include primary and specialty care clinics, urgent care, physical, occupational and speech therapy, an infusion clinic, dental clinic, laboratory services, imaging, and a pharmacy, providing comprehensive care for the community under one roof.

“With the wide range of services that Cooper Green intends to provide, Gresham Smith has the opportunity to lead the way in forward-thinking, innovative design strategies,” said Healthcare Architect Harold Yoder, AIA, LEED AP, LSSGB. “This facility is going to play an important role in meeting the needs of residents in the Birmingham metropolitan area for decades to come. We are excited to partner with both Cooper Green Mercy Health Services and the University of Alabama at Birmingham on this project.”

The facility will feature expanded imaging services, including plans for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine that will ease scheduling for Cooper Green patients who need screening. The medically oriented gym will offer access to multiple therapies and serve as a fitness gym for patients, promoting both on-going preventative wellness and rehabilitation. To become a centralized location for laboratory visits and vaccinations, the phlebotomy and injection clinic is being designed to support team-based, multidisciplinary care.

Construction will begin this winter and is expected to be complete in the summer of 2024. Cooper Green Mercy Health Services Authority is an affiliate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Health System.
