Expanding the Library Footprint to Create Civic Energy

The trend in urbanization that has unfolded over the past two decades has dramatically increased the value of well-designed – but often hard to find – urban and suburban open spaces. These open, flexible spaces support a mix of uses from fairs and markets, to general recreation, parks, rallies and musical events. At the same time, the diversification of library services invites a wider range of patrons thereby increasing the opportunity to attract non-users of traditional services. There is a clear synergy between libraries and public spaces as both attempt to attract and accommodate the widest variety of users and fully leverage civic investments.
