Gresham Smith is proud to announce that two projects were honored at the 2026 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Birmingham Design Awards. The Water Tower Global Innovation Hub received an Honor Award, signifying the highest level of design excellence and showcasing projects that meet the most rigorous standards. Cooper Green Mercy Health Clinic received a Merit Award for its sophisticated design and community impact.

A collaboration between Gresham Smith’s Water + Environment, Life and Work Places, Industrial, Building Engineering, and Land Planning markets, the Water Tower Global Innovation Hub received the highest recognition in the Large Project category. Located adjacent to the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center (WRC) in Gwinnett County, Georgia, the facility includes laboratory space, smart classrooms, a multipurpose training and conference space, and an outdoor demonstration bay supported by process flows from the WRC.

In the Extra Large category, Cooper Green Mercy Health Clinic received a Merit Award as a Birmingham healthcare project making a meaningful community impact. The comprehensive range of services provided in the new space helps foster healthier lifestyles and social connection, ultimately expanding support for underserved members of the community. The project also features a clear and well-organized floor plan along with a layered, articulated facade that adds depth and visual interest and creates an inviting, sophisticated presence both inside and out.
