Gresham Smith Names Luca Carraro as Market Design Leader for Aviation

Architect’s Promotion Highlights Firm’s Commitment to Design Excellence in the Aviation Industry

Gresham Smith is pleased to announce that Luca Carraro, RIBA, has been named market design leader for the firm’s Aviation market, after previously serving as a studio design leader. In his new role, he will help guide the market’s strategic design direction, support project teams in delivering high-quality, impactful solutions, and foster a culture of design excellence.

“Our market design leaders play a key role in creating the value we deliver to our clients through excellence in design,” said Aviation Executive Vice President Wilson Rayfield, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP. “Luca is not only an accomplished architect, but also a thoughtful mentor and respected leader within our firm and the broader design community.”

Since joining Gresham Smith’s Fort Lauderdale office in 2021, Carraro has been a driving force on several signature aviation projects, including those at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport and Norfolk International Airport. He brings a process-oriented design approach that challenges assumptions and prioritizes user experience.

Before joining Gresham Smith, Carraro spent over 15 years gaining global experience. He held senior roles at Foster + Partners in London and New York, where he contributed to a range of cultural, commercial, and infrastructure projects, including the Imperial War Museum renovation and Apple’s flagship retail spaces. He later served as an associate at Grimshaw in New York, leading enclosure design for Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal 1 and supporting large-scale mass-transit projects across the U.S.

“I see my role as elevating design excellence by encouraging critical thinking and making space for diverse perspectives,” said Carraro. “If design brings order to conflicting requirements, let’s expand those to include beauty, delight, a sense of place, and community needs. By creating a dynamic forum for diverse voices, we often arrive at richer, more human-centered solutions.”
