Gresham Smith is proud to announce that the firm’s design for the Baptist Health Care Pensacola Campus was honored with an Honor Award in the Institutional category from the Tennessee Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects’ (TNASLA) 2025 Professional Design Awards program. The honor award is awarded to one project in each category that the jury recognizes as superior professional accomplishment.
“This recognition is a testament to the power of purposeful design,” said Louis Johnson, PLA, ASLA, Executive Vice President of Land Planning at Gresham Smith. “We’re honored to partner with Baptist Health Care on a campus that not only reflects the spirit and history of Pensacola, but also fosters healing, resilience and community connection. To see our team’s vision celebrated by TNASLA reinforces the importance of designing with people and place in mind.”
Baptist Health Care’s new medical campus in Pensacola, Fla., is a testament to resilient, sustainable design, seamlessly blending patient care and community spirit. The campus features innovative design elements, including healing gardens and age-specific courtyards, centered around a park-like Town Square adorned with native heritage oaks. The landscape design prioritizes patient flow, natural light and greenery, fostering an outdoor healing ambience for both emotional and physical recovery. This project emerged as a solution to a local hospital’s growing community needs and environmental challenges, aiming to preserve community ties and strengthen resilience against Pensacola’s storm history. It’s more than a project – it’s a 70+ year legacy, reimagined for the future. Through collaborative effort and careful site assessment, this project enhances human experience and fosters community engagement.
The ASLA Tennessee Professional Design Awards provide a forum for the review and evaluation of work currently shaping the industry’s environment and highlight achievements in landscape architecture throughout the state of Tennessee to a wide audience. The project team was honored during the 2025 TNASLA Conference in Knoxville, Tenn. on April 16.
