When LG Chem decided to make a major investment in the United States that supports its strategic initiative of onshoring the production of active battery cathode material, they chose Gresham Smith to make the idea a reality. The new $3.2 billion facility sits on 420 acres in Clarksville, Tennessee, and it’s expected to bring nearly 900 jobs to the area. When the project was announced in late 2022, it represented the second-largest business investment—and largest ever by a foreign company—in Tennessee history. The multiphase expansion will ultimately allow for the annual production of 120,000 tons of active cathode material that’s enough to support the development of approximately 1.2 million electric vehicles with an anticipated range of 310 miles per charge. Gresham Smith is delivering the project on a fast-track basis. Construction is underway, and production is expected to start in 2025.
