Following the initiation of the first public-private hospital partnership between the Chinese government and a U.S. majority-owned and operated healthcare provider, Chinaco Healthcare Corporation (CHC) contracted GS&P to design a new acute care hospital in Cixi, China—a city of more than 2 million residents within the sub-provincial city of Ningbo, Zhejiang.

Partnering with the Shanghai Institute of Architectural Design and Research (SIADR) and the City of Cixi, GS&P designed the new 880,000-square-foot hospital with flexibility, sustainability and the overall staff and user experience in mind. The design not only supports improved operational processes but also enhanced patient and public flow to better serve a dynamically changing community.

Located on previously undeveloped land, the 500-bed facility has the scope to expand to 700 beds. The state-of-the-art hospital includes diagnostic and treatment facilities, a medical/surgical department, a cancer center, a 10-room OR, a 48-room intensive care unit, physician offices, women’s health services, pediatric care, VIP clinics, advanced imaging, and emergency and inpatient departments. The facility also incorporates traditional Chinese medicine as a part of its comprehensive service lines.

The first foreign-funded hospital in China, Cilin Hospital opened to the public in 2014. Merging the best of Western and traditional Eastern healthcare practices through experience, knowledge and culture, the $876 million facility brings cutting-edge medical services to this important manufacturing city in northern Zhejiang province.
