The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) wished to create a state-of-the-art Women and Infants Facility, and as the design firm for more than 40 completed UAB projects, the hospital turned to GS&P to produce this important project.

The 610,000 square-foot, 10-floor, 224 bed facility provides general women’s services, labor and delivery, NICU, PACU, CCN, ORs as well as a new radiation and oncology department. The new facility offers care for the state’s most high-risk patients, with state-of-the-art technologies and access to a complete portfolio of acute care services. Family-centered design is a focus in public spaces including lounges that offer computers, internet access, playrooms, education space, parent sleep rooms, laundry and shower facilities. The inclusion of a family hospitality center helps support patient and family needs. The facility is also directly tied to UAB’s North Pavilion by a pedestrian bridge. This allows for access to the complete portfolio of acute care services offered at UAB.

The design-build project began in the spring of 2007 and opened in early 2010. This short schedule of design to construction to completion was made possible by teamwork and through integrated project delivery. This project is an ideal example of teamwork with four GS&P offices as well as several subcontractors and vendors each needing information simultaneously in order to deliver this project according to the client's schedule.

Thanks to an outstanding team effort, we are pleased with our new facility and look forward to offering our community the benefits associated with this state-of-the-art hospital. Focused on creating an effective healing environment to support our patients, their families and our staff, this facility complements UAB’s existing services while addressing the needs specific to women and infants that were previously underserved.
