Gresham Smith is proud to announce the opening of the first phase of the new terminal project at Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) in Asheville, North Carolina, known as AVL Forward. The transformed space not only addresses increased demand but also honors the unique character of western North Carolina, establishing AVL as a modern gateway deeply rooted in place.
The first phase comprises 150,000 square feet, adding five new jet bridges with capacity to accommodate up to eight gates during peak periods. Larger hold rooms feature a wealth of airside amenities, including new dining options, larger restrooms, and a variety of comfortable seating arrangements. Expanded security screening and ticketing operations create a more efficient and seamless travel experience for passengers.
Community feedback led the design team to reflect the essence of western North Carolina. Inspiration from the Blue Ridge Mountains, French Broad River, and Asheville’s art deco architecture can be seen in the ceiling curves, flooring patterns and metalwork. The thoughtfully-designed, column-free concourse creates a spacious and airy environment, allowing natural light to fill the terminal and providing unobstructed views of the surrounding mountain vistas. A natural color palette reflective of the region, wood beams and stone detailing also bring the outdoors in.
“The Asheville Regional Airport team is proud to work side by side the Gresham Smith team who has taken great ownership in the AVL Forward project,” Lew Bleiweis, President and CEO of Asheville Regional Airport. “We are grateful for the partnership, support and commitment thus far and we look forward to our continued work together in the years to come.”
“We are proud to have partnered with Asheville Regional Airport to bring this project to life. Our goal was to create a space that not only enhances the passenger experience but also reflects the natural beauty and culture of western North Carolina. The modernized, expanded airport will connect people to the western North Carolina community for decades to come,” said Gresham Smith Senior Architect Brad Sucher, AIA.
In addition to the airport’s public-facing elements, Gresham Smith also upgraded operational spaces. This includes a modernized baggage handling system, a dedicated service road to remove congestion from Terminal Drive, an energy-efficient central energy plant, a solution to maintain stormwater quality and flow, and reworked underground utilities.
This project is a continuation of Gresham Smith’s work at Asheville Regional Airport. The firm previously designed a new five-story parking garage, which features a striking supergraphic of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
