Designed for Disruption: Mitigating Climate Threats Through Resilient Design

As essential facilities, hospitals must provide continuous care while addressing escalating risk and complexity of natural disasters. Baptist Health Care’s Pensacola, Florida campus, which opened in 2023, and includes a 264-bed hospital, a behavioral health hospital, and two medical office buildings. Using Gresham Smith’s climate risk assessment process, the team analyzed future climate hazards most likely to impact the site, including flood plains, potable water vulnerabilities, and threats to critical building systems. Modeling software was then used to estimate system-level impacts, informing resilient design strategies, such as layered utility redundancies, stormwater reuse, onsite wells, supplemental water infrastructure, and envelope integrities, to prevent care disruptions. This presentation will highlight how those strategies translated research-driven, human-centered design intent into real-world performance, enabling the campus to maintain operations during recent severe weather events.
